Meet Harriet The Hedgehog…Holly’s Dream Pet!

One question that I get asked a lot is ‘Can we have a pet please mummy?’, which as a parent is never an easy one to answer. Because they don’t understand the responsibility that comes with having a pet and all the care and looking after that they need. All they see is the fun part of having a pet.

We used to have a dog, Holly is too young to remember but Alice does remember and still talks about him fondly. I hope in the future that we will get a cat or another dog, but its not the right time for us at the moment.

Thankfully Pet Plan have helped me out and they asked Holly to draw her dream pet. I was really curious to see what Holly would draw, at the moment she is really into drawing spiders and I did not fancy having a spider come and live with us.

I left Holly to it and wanted to see what her little imagination would come up with. She proudly showed me her hedgehog and whilst it might not be my first choice for a pet, it’s was hers and that is all that matters.

We sent the picture off and a few weeks later a parcel arrived for Holly and she couldn’t wait to see what was inside. I love her little face in this photo, the look of anticipation.

The trouble when you are 3 years old is that you don’t really remember what you’ve done yesterday, let alone a few weeks ago. So, when Holly opened the bag, her first reaction was ‘What is this?’ and kind of a look of disgust!

I explained to her that this was the hedgehog that she drew and showed her the picture. That her dream pet drawing has been made into an actual toy pet that she can hold, love and care for. Well she loved it and quickly named it Harriet, which seems very fitting for a Hedgehog.

We talked about how we look after pets and Holly said she would hug her every day. It’s a great way to start teaching our children that animals need to be loved and looked after properly. To be responsible pet owners and make sure we take out insurance with companies like Petplan pet insurance, who know how important it is to make sure we protect our pets.

Harriet the Hedgehog might not be the most attractive looking Hedgehog, but Holly loves her and that is all that matters. With her pretty red bow, because that is what Alice wears to school. She is a cutie! (Holly, not so much Harriet 🙂 )

Holly couldn’t wait to show daddy when he came home. She was really proud that something she had drawn was now here in our house. I think it blew her little mind.

It’s safe to say that we’ve got a very happy Holly who just loves Harriet the Hedgehog!

Ahh that is the cutest hedgehog ever! I can imagine how excited she must have been, mine would love to see their pets come to life although I’m not sure they would be quite as cute as this one!

I love that she gave it the red bow, just like Alice! I love this idea, it’s so sweet! I’m not sure Max’s artistic skills are quite up to it yet though – he’s still just a scribbler really.

Aww this is lovely! It’s great that she drew it herself. Lia mainly draws spiders too, I suppose they’re just easy to draw but it’s odd that little girls who are obsessed with pink and unicorns always draw spiders!

  6. I squealed at how cute this is!! Thank goodness she didn’t draw that spider ey, I’d of been freaking out too. My boys are a bit too young for the pet questions yet, but I’ll definitely struggle with the deflection of basically no!

I think this is such a great way of teaching children about the responsibilty of owning a pet and how fun being able to design your very own cuddly pet!

Oh this is the cutest! We often get asked can we get a pet, which is a little ridiculous as they girls are scared of everything!! This is such a fun idea.

One of my girls drew a Petplan horse last year and they made it for and that one left a lot to be desired in the looks stakes too. However like your Holly mine loves her too. It’s a really nice idea. Mich x
