A country which is meant to be explored by car, Ireland is one of the finest road trip destinations in the world. Best of all, it is only a short ferry trip from the UK. Of course, a road trip can provide you with a sense of freedom, but you may also want to have a general route mapped out. If you are not sure where to get started, you have come to the right place! So, here are a few ideas of what you can see along the way.
A Land of Giants
Your kids are bound to be impressed by the story of the formation of Giant’s Causeway. The legend goes that an Irish and Scottish giant meeting to have a battle, and the former building a walkway so that he could cross. Actually, the landscape was formed by a volcanic eruption, but this doesn’t make it any less impressive! Also on this road trip, you can pay a visit to Titanic Belfast to get a better understanding of the most famous ship in the world. There are a variety of coastal routes around here that you can embark upon to enjoy some special scenery.
Though it may be small, the Burren National Park takes its rightful place amongst Ireland’s most spectacular. As well as the beautiful limestone landscape, the whole family can enjoy some wildlife spotting of animals including badgers, foxes, goats, and otters. The west coast of the country is the kind of place that you can take your time to enjoy, so check out some family hotels in Ireland. But even if you only have a couple of days to spare, you can still enjoy a special time.
The Ring of Kerry
World-famous as one of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the entire country, the Ring of Kerry is almost 180 kilometres long and you could simply enjoy a road trip around here. And if you are lucky with the weather, you should make sure that you have your swimming stuff packed as you can take a dip in the sea or a lake. Make sure that you stop off in the beautiful town of Dingle, where you can see sharks and penguins in the Oceanworld aquarium.
Dublin and the Sea
If you are going to Ireland, it makes sense that you want to enjoy a trip to the capital. The city of Dublin can easily take up a few days of your time, but when you are done here, you should drive over to the sands of Brittas for some time on the beach. The water is calm and the sand is clean, and if you are braced for the chill, you can head here for some autumn swimming.
Any one of these four road trips would make a fantastic family getaway, so why not start planning to embark on one of them today?
