What I take on a flight to entertain children…

The first time I took a flight with children, Alice was twelve months old and it was relatively ok. Well, it hasn’t put me off doing it again. We are soon jetting off on holiday with both our girls, which is a little daunting, but we are prepared and it will be worth it…I hope!

I thought I would share with you what I pack in their bags to take on the plane to keep them entertained and hopefully keep them happy.

Both girls have a rucksack each, hopefully meaning they can pop it on their back and carry it themselves, wishful thinking maybe, but we shall see.

Alice’s Bag…

Alice’s bag has a front section, that detaches from the rucksack and you can use it as a lunchbox. This is really handy for storing all her snacks in for the flight. The rucksack is from Babymel, I can’t find the exact one online, but here is a similar one in this brand and style.

So, item number one is snacks…I will be adding a few more nearer the time, but I mainly take lots of little bits to whip out when needed. Plus the important lolly pop, there will be two going in the bag for Alice to suck on at take off and landing for her ears.

I got these lovely Usborne Dressing Up Sticker Books, there are four small books in a handy box. Alice just loves dressing the dolls up, the four books are: Dream Jobs, Best Friends, Ice Skaters and Shopping. I will pop two in her bag for the way out and keep two for the journey home. I brought these from Debenhams for £5, but I can’t see them on their website but here are similar ones on Amazon.

Packs of plasticine too, which I thought were a handy size and they can makes things using the table on the plane. These were 99p at Amazon, as an add-on item.

I was shopping for something else the other day in Mothercare and saw this little picnic building bricks, it was in the sale for £1.50 and it’s the perfect size to go in the bag. This should keep Alice entertained whilst building it and also then playing with it.

Alice just recently started to get into Paw Patrol and I saw this Memory Game in The Entertainer this week, for just £3 in the sale. A game that we can easy do on the plane and a bargain!

Alice loves to do colouring, but to make it new and hopefully fun. I have brought her some new felt tip pens from Amazon, £1.50 as an add-on item. Plus a Disney Palace Pets colouring book from Wilkinson for £1, sorry I can’t find this online.

Her frozen headphones are going in and I will add the iPad mini in too nearer the time. Alice normally will only watch one episode of her current favourite and will then move on. So I am not expecting her to watch it the whole time, but even twenty minutes helps! I brought these from Amazon a while ago, but they are still available.

Toilet Roll

You are probably wondering why I have a picture of a toilet roll, stay with me…The girls will have one each to decorate and  make a telescope. Then we can play a game, can you spot the toilets? can you spot the man in the red top? You get the idea, who doesn’t love a telescope!

That is Alice’s bag already to go…

Holly’s Bag…

Holly loves a bag, she never leaves the house without one, this is her favourite one at the moment. I brought this one from Cath Kidston, she will get a surprise when she see’s what is inside!

Snacks of course, again I will add some more in. These will go in the front pocket of her bag.

I found this great fairy sticker book, which looks like a bag. Holly is going to love it! She has started to enjoy stickers and these are a great way to entertain her. Again, I brought this from Wilkinson for £1, but I can’t find it online.

Holly loves babies, it is probably what she plays with the most. I found this cute little baby in Wilkinsons for only £2, which is prefect to pop in her bag.

I also picked up this handy Peppa Pig colouring pack in Wilkinson’s, it comes with lots of pages to colour and a set of crayons in the back. Plus it looks like a bag…bonus! Sorry I can’t find it online, it was only £1 in the shop.

I picked up this Safari Threading Beads, where you thread the different animals on a lace. A great way to entertain Holly, not only threading them all together, but playing with the animals too. Plus this little castanet too. These are from Wilkinson’s only £3 for the Threading Beads and 80p for the castanet.

I brought Holly these headphones just in case we need them, she will only sit and watch one episode of Topsy and Tim before she moves on. They are from Amazon for £14.99.

That’s it Holly’s bag is already to go…

I will also have lots of wipes to hand for any messy hands.

As you can see there is lots for them to do and it didn’t cost me much money, except the headphones which they will use a lot overtime.

Do you have any tips for entertaining toddlers on a flight? I would love to hear them…

I have included links to any items that I could find if you want to take a look. Any links to Amazon will be through the affiliate programme, which means if you buy them I will get a couple of pence.

What a fab fab fab idea. I also did packs for the kids on the aeroplane minus the awesome, funky bags. LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM.

The headphones are a great idea that I hadn’t thought of. We are flying with our girls in three weeks so I’m planning their bags (and mine) now. Thanks for the tips! #thelist

Great post – we usually take similar stuff. earphones are a must, stickers, threading, colours and generally anything new and haven’t seen before generally keeps their attention for a while! We are not going abroad this year and whilst i will really miss 2 weeks of sunshine I wont miss the plane journey!

Great planning! This looks like an amazing selection and I hope it keeps them happy and entertained. I’d be a little terrified to take the boys on a plane since their ASD makes sitting still for any length of time close to impossible but I’ll refer back to this if I do ever need to.

This is such a helpful post because I wouldn’t have a flipping clue! We’ve never attempted going abroad yet and now #2 is on the way it’ll probably be a while, but I’ll definitely be referring to the posts I see like this, I can imagine it’ll be quite something keeping two kids entertained on a flight! Brilliant choices here 🙂 I hate flying so I could do with my own distraction bag in future 😉

I love all the bits from Wilkinsons, I’ll have to send Rich in next time he’s back in the UK!

This is a really useful post, you’ve got some great ideas in there! I’m a big fan of sticker books in general, they’re fab for keeping kids entertained! x #TheList

Wow, loads of brilliant ideas! I’ve only taken Libby on a flight once when she was nine months and she slept straight through it. I do hope to do it again in the future though. I particularly love your telescope idea!

Loads of great things in their bags. I’ve packed similar for the boys before. Loving the toilet roll idea! Thanks for linking to #picknmix x

Lots of great ideas to keep kids entertained on the airplane! I can imagine it would get quite boring for them on long trips! These are such great suggestions to keep in mind when packing their carry on bags!
