When Holly started school in September it felt like I was starting a new chapter in my life and after 6 years of having a little one at home to look after, I would now have some time for me. There is a time in your life, when you are surrounded by nappies and very sleep deprived, that you wonder if this is your life forever. And whilst the newborn and toddler stage is wonderful, it is also constant and exhausting.
Then before you know it, the years have flown by and you are waving them off to school. As much as being a Mum is the best thing that has happened to me, now the girls are older there is a part of me that wants to be, me again.
With both girls now at school, I have been given the gift of time, something that I haven’t had a lot of before and the chance to do things for me. I can take some time out of my week to spend with family and friends and not have to worry about the girls, or feel guilty about not being with them.
So, when I was recently invited to spend the day at the Donnington Valley Hotel & Spa, I knew the answer was a yes. Donnington Valley Hotel & Spa is a privately owned hotel, spa and golf club and it is set in some stunning grounds. My sister in law and I couldn’t wait to enjoy their Sonoma Indulge spa day.
The Sonoma Indulge spa day is a where you get full use of their leisure facilities, a welcome drink and light breakfast, robe, slippers and towel of the day. A 55 minute treatment, carefully selected to help you really indulge. A Bento style lunch or afternoon tea and a gift to take home.
We arrived at 10am and were given a warm welcome and immediately offered breakfast, which was a lovely start to the day. We both had toast and a hot drink, which felt like a real treat to eat breakfast and not be in a rush.
Once we had finished we went to the changing rooms, we had each been given a locker key and inside our locker were towels, a robe, flip flops and a gift. There was plenty of space in our locker to hang up our clothes and put our bag and shoes.
Once we were changed we went to the pool area, where they have a gorgeous swimming pool, a jacuzzi and plenty of sun loungers for everyone. I can imagine in the summer it’s lovely with the doors open too.
It was lovely to sit and relax. We did take our books with us, but we ended up just siting and chatting. Its not very often we are together with no children to interrupt us or need entertaining. It was lovely to just take in the moment and its the most relaxed I’ve felt in a while.
We then had a dip in the jacuzzi and it was lovely and warm, before heading into the Aroma Room. They also had a steam room and a sauna next to it. The Aroma Room was lovely, not overbearing with the smell and lovely twinkly colour changing lights on the ceiling.
It was then time for lunch. We had the option of having lunch by the pool or in the restaurant area and we opted for the restaurant area. We had also chosen the afternoon tea and what a treat it was and delicious. We had a range of sandwiches, scones and cakes. There is just something special about an afternoon tea and I also feel like its a nice treat to have.
What was lovely, was there was no rushing about, and we could just go along at our own pace. Enjoying it all and there is something relaxing about eating lunch in your dressing gown.
We then headed upstairs to the quiet room to relax before our treatment. When you enter the treatment area, there is a seating area and also where you can get your nails done.
In the quiet room, are loungers to relax on, water to help yourself to, magazines to read and a blanket to get cosy in if you want to. In the summer you can open the doors and sit outside too.
We were lucky to have it to ourselves, which meant we didn’t have to be too quiet and we could have a chat.
I love a spa treatment, any type of back massage is just heaven to me. When I was looking through the list of treatments I knew that I had to try the warm stone massage, it just sounded ideal for me.
When it was time for our treatment, our beauty therapist collected us from the quiet room and took us into our own treatment rooms. I can honestly say it was such a lovely massage, it was a full body warm stone massage and I haven’t felt that relaxed in a long time. She had asked me how I like it, in terms of pressure etc and it was prefect.
Shelagh had chosen the Sonama Aromatherapy Massage and she said her massage was the best she had and very different to anything she had before. We were both given a glass of water and relaxed in the quiet room afterwards.
It was then time for us to head back to the changing rooms and get ready to come home. They had everything you needed to get ready and as my girls were at a school disco, it meant that I could pick them up looking presentable.
We came home with a lovely gift and can’t wait to try it at home. We had a lovely day at Donnington Valley Hotel Spa, it was just what we both needed and we both said we need to do it more often. It’s not until you have a spa day, that you remember how good it makes you feel, both physically and mentally. I definitely came home with a spring in my step.
As a busy mum I don’t often get time to just relax and not have to rush about and it was a real treat.
