A Day In The Life Of…Sparkles & Stretchmarks

I’m back with another A Day In The Life Of… It’s a chance for other bloggers to share what a typical day looks like for them. I’m proper nosey and I love to see what people get up to in their day. It’s also a great chance for you to find some more blogs that you might like to follow.

Today we have Hayley from Sparkles & Stretchmarks, a mummy to three boys and she has her hands full! I’m going to hand over to Hayley to introduce herself…

I often worry that people will think I’m a bit mad if I share what a typical Day In My Life looks like as, to be honest, I keep quite peculiar hours – but I’m currently the sole breadwinner in our household which obviously means the pressure is really on to make sure that I’m providing – especially as my income comes exclusively from blogging and freelance writing!

I have 3 children under the age of 4 – Tyne is 3, Noah is 23 months and Sailor is 12 months – and although their Dad is here to look after them, all of them seem quite adamant that only I will do when they need their meals making, their bottoms changing, or a cuddle – which means that getting on with my work during the hours that they’re awake is almost impossible right now! So instead, I do what I can here and there and do the bulk of my work in the evening. It’s not ideal, but it’s the only way it seems to work at the moment!

Here is what my average week day looks like:

10:00: Yes this is when my day usually starts (you’ll see why later!) – the children will already be up with their Dad, so I wake up and usually check my emails and social media accounts on my phone before anything else! (Tell me I’m not alone in doing this?!) I’ll then get dressed, and head downstairs…grab some breakfast and a coffee, and go see the kids who will then eat all of my breakfast, spill my coffee all over me and climb on me for a while! Standard. I’ll have a little play with them and then I’ll get them dressed and ready for the day.

11.30:  I head off to make the kids lunches, and get them settled down to eat. I then leave them in their Dads care while I “go to work” (Which means I step into the next room and lock the office door, whilst trying to get things done!) – I usually start by responding to any emails that have come in. I check through social media and respond to any comments or messages,
Then I get to work – some days I will be editing videos, other days I’ll be writing articles, it all depends on what work I have on that week – there will usually be invoices to send and payments to chase, some accounting to do, graphics to make for various projects, and sometimes there will be calls to take (There seems to have been a lot of this lately!).

Throughout my working day, the kids will keep knocking on the door and coming in to ask me for various things or just to sit on my knee for a while…so it takes a while to actually achieve much!

15:30: I usually log off around this time, and go to spend some time with the kids. I will usually set up a messy play activity or do some baking with them if its a rubbish weather day, but if its not then we’ll usually go out to the park for a little while to let them run off some energy or perhaps down to the beach in the summer – we live right on the seafront which is very handy.

17:30: We’ll head home around now if we have ventured out, or tidy the mess away if we’ve stayed home…and I will make a start on the kids dinners. I always meal plan so we always know exactly what everybody is having, and any prep will have been done the night before. I sit with the kids while they eat, and we have some Silly Time together.

18:30: I take the kids upstairs for bath time, and one by one I get them ready for bed and settled down for the evening. Sailor doesn’t have story time yet so he is the first to go to bed with just a bottle and a cuddle, then I get Noah and Tyne ready for bed together and they sit together and have a story.

Tyne then pops into bed while I go and get Noah settled in his room.

19:30: I come back through to Tyne’s room and usually read him another story (because Noah chose the first one!), and we have our little “chat time” where we talk about the day we’ve had and anything coming up that we’re excited about – then I lay him down and give him a kiss, and go back downstairs to the office!

20:00: I get myself back to work, while Jon prepares our dinner (we don’t eat with the kids at the moment because it’s impossible to actually eat anything if we try to – their ages are so difficult at the moment and they need a lot of help and encouragement to eat, so we prefer to eat alone when we can enjoy it and actually have some time to sit together and talk!) and does any meal prep for the next day.

22:30: This is usually when we end up sitting down to eat!! We usually like to watch a TV show together or just have a chat and unwind.

Midnight – 3:30/4 am: Jon will head up to bed, and I will usually go back to work to finish off any bits and pieces that I didn’t manage to finish during the day.  This doesn’t happen every night but most nights it does. Once I finish working, I usually have a quick bath before bed to unwind.

So there you have it! I don’t usually go to bed until around 4 am and my working/family time hours are kind of all over the place at the moment!

I do have three full days off per week though when our routines are much more settled, and we eat and sleep at more normal times – but this seems to be the only way that the working days work right now!

Thank you Hayley for sharing your day with us. If you would like to find out more about Hayley, head over to her blog or follow her on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.
