Do you ever feel like you’re in your own version of Groundhog Day? I know that some days this is exactly how I feel and I’ve definitely felt this more since Alice started school nearly two years ago. The week days just merge into one, the days look and feel the same. The weekends come and go in a blink of an eye and every week feels like we’re counting down to the next school holiday, which gives us a chance to break free from routine for a bit.
It seems I’m not alone, according to new research nine in ten brits feel the same. A study of 1,500 adults which looked at their daily routines, it would appear we are creatures of habit and 67% of us are ‘stuck in a rut’.
I’m definitely a creature of habit in most areas of my life, to some extent this brings me comfort. But it can also make life a little mundane. On the occasion that I’ve thrown the routine out of the window, let the girls stay up a little bit later or had a summer picnic in the evening. It’s felt good and I vow to do it more often, but then life takes over again and we are back to routine.
Highland Spring have recently launched a campaign, calling people to add some H2Oomph to their everyday and shake up their routine. Which is something that I think we all need to do and they challenged me to do just this.
But, what do they mean by adding H2Oomph to your everyday? It’s making easy manageable swaps that add some omph. You could swap the boring tube commute and hop on your bike, swap a night in watching TV, for a last minute get together with friends or maybe swap your style and go for a more bolder look.
Find something that is manageable, excites you and shakes up that routine. Let’s get out of that rut.
What did I do? We don’t live too far from Alice’s school, it’s easily walkable but we drive to and from school. It’s easier, we are normally in a rush in the mornings and twice a week I have to pick Holly up from preschool too and I can’t walk to it. But there are 3 days a week, where we could easily leave the car at home when I pick Alice up from school.
So, I’ve been swapping the car for the scooter and let me tell you that made my little girl SO happy. Her face lit up when she saw me outside her classroom with her scooter, not believing that she was going to get to scoot home. Not only did she enjoy it, but for me I get to walk to school and back again which not only is good exercise for me. It gives me a chance to clear my mind.
When I drive to pick Alice up, I park up and then sit on my phone finishing off some work or scrolling through Instagram. Never really switching off. The walk to and from school, forces me to have a break. A much needed break.
You can just imagine Alice’s face when I turned up again and again with her scooter. It’s definitely added some H2Oomph to our lives.
I wanted to push things even more and twice a week Holly has different classes, swimming and ballet. Before we go to the classes we spend some time at home. Holly will play with her toys and I will potter about doing jobs, just really clock watching until we have to leave. It felt like dead time, that I wasn’t making the most of.
Now if it’s nice weather I’ve been asking Holly if she wants to go for a walk in the woods and find treasure, which for Holly is sticks and dandelions, and she jumps at the chance. She loves the freedom to run and yes she loves to run. I get to enjoy this time with her more, helping her find the ‘perfect’ stick. Making up fun games with her and soaking up this time with her. As before I know it, September will be here and she too will be off to school.

I’m terrible for getting into a routine and then sticking to it. Part of that is because it brings me comfort, but it does mean that I don’t push myself out of my comfort zone. Which isn’t always a good thing. Holly has swimming class and Ballet class during the week and before each of these classes, we tend to potter around at home. Holly plays with her toys and we don’t really make the best use of this time. Now we head outside, go for a walk in the woods and look for treasure (which is just sticks for Holly!).
