Today, I’m going to talk about making your home more modern. I don’t care so much about the outside of your home, it can look as old as you like. In fact, I often find it quite funny if your exterior is quite old and traditional, but inside you have a wickedly modern interior. It’s this juxtaposition of styles that just seems very fun to me.
Anyway, back to the main point; modern interiors. Shortly, I will give you some of my best ideas for things to do to modernise your interior. But first, I just want to spend a little bit of time explaining why
Why Have A Modern Interior?
The primary reason people think about modernising their interior is simply for the visual effect. A modern home can look way more visually appealing than an old looking one. I mean, think about it, let’s say you’ve lived in your family home for a decade. You haven’t really done much to the design over the years, as you’ve been caught up in the whirlwind that is family life. So, what started off as a nice looking interior design ten years ago, is now outdated and not to your tastes. It can be embarrassing having friends over as you feel they judge your old wallpaper and carpet. So, adding a modern touch to your interiors helps improve the way it looks.
But, it can also make your house a lot safer and more practical too. There are many aspects of new home designs that focus on improving safety in the home. Likewise, a huge factor in modern interior design is how practical and efficient it can make your home. Don’t worry if you don’t understand this too much right now, it will all be explained as you keep on reading!
Right, you can now see why I think it’s a great idea to have a modern interior and spruce up your house. The question is; how do you do it? So, here are a few things you should consider if you want to modernise your interior design:
Install Underfloor Heating
On the face of it, underfloor heating doesn’t seem like an interior design based thing. However, it does something that can massively improve the way your house looks. Underfloor heating is a modern trend, and it involves getting rid of your radiators and installing heaters underneath your floor. As a consequence, you can improve the way any room looks by getting rid of old and crusty looking wall heaters. This dramatically boosts the visual appeal and gives your house a modern look instantly. Then, you have the bonus of underfloor heating being more efficient and heating your rooms quicker than wall heaters. So, your home improves in that aspect as well!
Get Rid Of Crazy Patterns
In the past, it was common to have wallpaper or carpets with lots of crazy patterns on them. I remember in our old home we used to have a carpet with loads of flower patterns on it, and it just looked awful. Obviously, at the time it was laid down we thought it looked good because that was the style of the times. The same goes for wallpaper – loads of people have overly patterned wallpaper on their walls. The modern approach is to strip down these patterns and go for a plain approach. All modern homes are built with neutral wallpaper and flooring. In fact, most flooring has changed from old carpet to modern laminate/vinyl designs. This is a great way to improve the way your interior design looks, and make it more updated. Say goodbye to the wild patterns of the past, and make your home look modern with a simpler, more relaxed approach. Stick to light wallpaper too – that’s another modern trend!
Install An Electric Fireplace
Fireplaces are a fantastic addition to any living area. They create a focal point in your room, and loads of interior designers recommend them. Understandably, when you have a family with young children, the thought of a live fire can be worrisome. You don’t want to take the risk that your children might wander towards the flames. So, the modern idea is to install an electric fireplace instead. I love this idea for so many reasons. For one, it looks gorgeous and really adds a modern feel to your living room. As well as this, it’s far safer than a live fireplace, making your home more child-friendly. It ticks pretty much all the boxes when it comes to good home improvements.
Become A Minimalist
If some of the ideas on this list seem a bit complicated or expensive, then you’ll love this one. It requires almost no effort, and can probably save you money too. You see, these days, being a minimalist is a very trendy approach to interior design. A minimalist follows a simple principle; you get rid of clutter and only have a few basic things in each room. The effect this has on how your home looks and functions are astounding. Mainly, there’s way less clutter in your home, making it more spacious and giving everyone more room to do what they want without feeling cramped. You get more out of every square foot in your property, it’s such a clever approach. As a result, your home will be tidier all the time too. If there’s less stuff on display, there are fewer things to clean. From an aesthetic point of view, it’s just gorgeously modern too. A minimalist home looks good because there isn’t a load of junk ruining how a room looks. You don’t go overboard, you keep things nice and simple.
Well, hopefully, you’ve now got a few ideas on how to modernise your interior design. I love decorating and doing things that improve the way my home looks and feels. It’s definitely something I recommend you try, particularly if you’ve lived in the same home for years with no change. Often, all it takes is a quick update of your interior design to make you fall in love with your home again.
